2011 – Bras d’Or Lakes Father & Son Cruise

The plan was to sail Calamity from Sydney to Halifax via the Bras d’Or Lakes and along the Eastern Shore in early July 2011. The Fathers (Jeff Cass, Mark Newman and me – David Baird) and the sons (Tom, Ciaran and Ted) flew from Ottawa to Halifax where we picked up the Suburban and drove to Sydney. We made one error – we planned to stock up the boat on Canada Day. Everything was closed…and much to delight of the boys, we did a big shop at the Shoppers Drug Mart. Health food all round. We sailed around from Sydney to Baddeck, then sailed up to St. Peter’s lock. After looking at the forecast and walking to the Atlantic side of the locks and staring at the fog bank…we decided to abandon the cold ocean sailing for the warm and sunny lakes. We had a fabulous holiday with the boys, eventually ending on a mooring in Baddeck before heading home.
